Spotlight on Polish
I have been enjoying working on Polish. I had a very dear friend from Poland in year 6. It is so nice to have an opportunity now as an adult to try to learn Polish. We have recently reconnected over facebook since she has not changed her name and I have a married name now. I am so pleased to have facebook to keep in touch, now she lives in another state and she has shared photos of her little baby.
Polish. - Ten pomidor jest dobry. |
---|
English - This tomato is good. |
Reflection: I love that tomato is similar to the Italian pomodoro, meaning golden apple. it has taken me longer to get used to dobry as good. It seems to have many forms and I am still working out if there are variations for each gender (masculine, feminine and possibly neuter as well as singular and plural forms of the endings. a quick read on the internet says
"In the plural, the masculine personal nouns are distinguished from all others, which collapse into one non-masculine personal gender (niemęskoosobowy)."
So that simplifies thing a little, there is gender in the singluar. But all plurals are non-masculine.

Spotlight on Turkish
I am interested in learning Turkish as our local vet is rom Turkey. It is so wonderful to live in in a place with lots of different nationalities including Filipino and South African. I am look forward to if Duolingo adds Tagalog and Afrikaans to the list of languages coming in the incubator soon. And being a language nerd I would also like to try Khmer and Icelandic one day if I get the opportunity.
Turkey - Onlar elma yer. (they (an) apple eat)
English - Where is grandfather?
Reflection: the pronoun they starts the sentence. the indefiniate article is implied (an) it seems like articles are only included for definite aritcles 'the' so if the writer omits any article it must ne a 'an'. the verb goes at the end of the sentence like Germand does. I wonder if this is often or always.

***I would love some discussion in the comments. Is your target language (the language you are learning as a foreigner) similiar to another language in this comparative list? Please comment any similarities or differences you notice? Or just a nice short comment with which language you are learning and what country you live in :-)
*** Extension challenge: can you make a sentence using two or more of the words from the word list. The first picture in a spotlight on a language post shows my recent percentage achievement score in that language on Duolingo. Perhaps you can use two or more of those words in a sentence and write it as a comment on the blog post.
Or want to comment but don't speak the target language? Try translating the example sentence into the language you are studying, if you can.
